A prison cleaner who earns a monthly salary of Sh. 20,000 was in March 2022 found with an astonishing wealth of over Sh. 300 million.
The prison cleaner was found with Sh. 257 million in the bank and Sh. 89 million worth of houses and cars. This included three houses worth Sh. 57 million and seven vehicles valued at Sh. 32 million.
This prompted Justice Esther Maina of the Anti-Corruption Court to order the freezing of the bank accounts belonging to this prison cleaner and the seizing of his properties.
“Preliminary investigations have also established that the sum aforesaid was embezzled through fictitious contracts for the supply of food and rations to the State Department of Corrections, which goods were never supplied,”
the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) said in court.
According to the EACC, the vehicles were purchased between May and November 2017. The EACC further said that the cleaner received the Sh. 257 million cash through seven companies that were registered between 2012 and 2016. The companies listed him as the sole proprietor.

“The seven enterprises were the conduits for embezzlement/fraudulent acquisition of Sh. 257 million from the State Department. The properties so purchased constitute proceeds of corrupt conduct or corruption, which EACC is mandated to seek recovery of,”
the EACC said.
