Prisons boss Ogallo arrested by anti terror unit hours after sack by Uhuru

Immediate former Kenya Prison Service Commander general Wycliffe Ogallo was on Wednesday afternoon arrested by special agents from the Anti Terror Police Unit. Ogallo’s arrest came hours after he was sacked by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Ogallo was arrested together with Kamiti Prison boss Charles Mutembei following a jailbreak that saw three terror convicts escape from the maximum prison. Ogallo and Mutembei were then taken to offices of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

The escapees include Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga, aka Zarkawi, aka Alex, aka Shukri, Mohamed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo, aka Yusuf. They escaped the highly guarded prison after removing part of the wall leading to their cell block.

In a twist, the National Police Service tweeted that Wycliffe Ogallo and Mutembei had not been arrested, but were only escorted home. Ogallo was replaced by Brigadier (Rtd) John Warioba in his place.

The replacement followed a meeting that was conducted at State House by president Uhuru Kenyatta. “The State Department of Correctional Services has similarly been directed to sanction disciplinary action against all Kenya Prisons Service personnel who were on duty when the security breaches occurred; which action shall include redeployment and/or immediate suspension of all affected officers,” a statement from State House said.
