The First Lady Mrs Rachel Ruto is seeking to reintroduce the ‘Maziwa ya Nyayo’ school milk program that ran during former late President Daniel Arap Moi’s reign. On Frida March 14, 2025, she met with dairy sector stakeholders who included the Kenya Dairy Board and 40 milk processors in a bid to get backing for a nationwide rollout.
This comes after milk pilot project that is currently being ran in Nakuru and Migori counties. In the two counties, pupils receive a packet of milk twice a week throughout the school calendar year.
“Many of us recall the impact of Maziwa ya Nyayo which boosted school attendance and nutrition. We seek to build upon that legacy. A packet of milk in each child’s hands unlocks their future, empowers farmers, and drives our country’s economic growth,” said Mrs. Ruto. Her programme is dubbed Feed One End Hunger initiative.
It is estimated that during the late president’s rule, Maziwa ya Nyayo reached 4.3 million pupils in some 11,000 public schools. It is however not clear how funding for the programme will be sourced and how the programme will be rolled out in counties that have school feeding programmes.
