Raila: Why US, Europe didn’t want me to become president

Co-Op post

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has spoken on what he termed as opposition to his presidential candidature by western nations.

Raila, who lost in the August presidential election to Dr. William Ruto, said that his vow to turn Kenya into an industrial and manufacturing hub did not sit in well with Western powers such as the United States and Europe who practice capitalism.

“The international monopoly capital is not comfortable when you are talking about making Kenya a manufacturing hub to supply Eastern and Central African region. Those people are not happy with you when you talk about beneficiation and value addition to local raw materials that are going to compete against international monopoly capital,” said Raila. He spoke on Thursday October 6.

Raila added that this opposition to his candidature was the reason why his claim that the August presidential election was stolen in favour of Dr. Ruto was not supported by any of the Western powers, including the United States.

“That is the reason why they don’t want us to go in there, but we cannot forever remain servants of international monopoly capital, Africa must rise,” he said.

Raila further accused the West for saying the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission did a splendid job even though four commissioners led by Juliana Cherera had walked out during the announcement of the final presidential tally.

“On August 15, you saw the chairman of the Commission running to go and announce the results and the bigger parts of the commissioners saying ‘no, these are not the results.’ The international community cannot condemn such kind of an action because they knew what was happening. It can only happen in Africa, and not in Europe and the US,” he alleged.

“It is only here where the chairman of the electoral commission goes alone out of the seven commissioners, then they say he is the hero of the day instead of saying he is the devil of the day.”

A few days to the General Elections, the United States Embassy in Nairobi issued a security alert against Kisumu City, which is widely perceived to be a political stronghold of Raila.

Ahead of the ruling by the Supreme Court, the US Embassy issued yet another alert on Kisumu. The two alerts were pointedly perceived by many as telltale signs that Raila would lose the presidential election and later the presidential petition.
