Rare fruit earning farmers Sh500K from 10 trees

Jackfruit, commonly known as ‘fenesi’ in Swahili, is one of the most popular fruits in the western parts of Kenya.

The high demand for the fruit has presented an opportunity for farmers in the region to tap into the local and international markets.

According to Peter Kubebea, a jackfruit farmer in Buyosi village, Busia County, Jack fruit farming is more profitable than maize farming.

“One tree can produce over three hundred fruits. So within one year, a farmer can make Ksh 450,000. Half a million from 10 trees. It is better than growing maize which may earn you five or 10 bags in one year,” Kubebea explained.

He adds that the plant takes up to three years to mature and can produce up to 300 fruits, with each fruit weighing between five and forty kilograms, depending on the size.

According to agricultural firm Farmers Trend, the plant requires low maintenance, which saves an agribusiness investor a huge amount of expenses.

In addition, profits from the fruits are rewarding, and farmers can make up to Sh500,000 from just 10 trees.

”A single mature tree can produce upwards of 300 fruits in a year, with each fruit fetching a price between 400 and 650 Kenyan shillings. This translates to a potential annual income of 450,000 Shillings from just 10 trees,” Farmers Trend states.

”Compared to traditional crops, jackfruit offers a significantly higher return on investment, making it a lucrative option for farmers seeking to improve their livelihoods.’’ It adds.

Jackfruit thrives in environments with warm temperatures and ample rainfall. It requires minimal fertilizer and is resistant to most major pests and diseases.

The fruit is widely cultivated in Busia county which accounts for 65% of the total production in Kenya. Other key producers include Kakamega, Bungoma, Kwale, Kilifi, and Vihiga counties.

Jackfruit has gained popularity globally in recent years as a versatile and nutritious fruit. It is relatively low in calories, making it suitable for those looking to maintain a balanced diet.

In addition, the fruit is a good source of vitamin C and contains Potassium which is an important mineral for health and proper fluid balance in the body.

The global jackfruit market reached a value of USD 322.3 million in 2023. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.40% between 2024 and 2032, reaching a value of USD 435.47 million by 2032.
