President William Ruto has shocked the country after announcing that Kenya has already paid half a billion shillings to host the Grammy Awards in 2027.
Ruto made the announcement during a Townhall meeting on Monday night. He claimed that the payment can be confirmed by representatives of the Grammy Awards who were present at the event.
“The money for Grammys we already paid. We already paid Sh. 500 million and I’m sure the gentleman from Grammys can confirm that that is the direction we are going,” he claimed.
The Grammy Awards are awards presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry.

The awards are generally regarded as the most prestigious and significant awards in the music industry in the world.
The upcoming edition of the awards will be the 2025 Grammy Awards. The edition, officially known as the 67th GRAMMY Awards, will take place live at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 2, 2025, broadcasting live on the CBS Television Network and streaming live and on demand on Paramount+.
It was not clear how the awards which are hosted in the United States became a priority project for the current government to a point of gobbling half a billion shillings and or the value that Kenya shall stand to gain from such an undertaking.
It was also not clear if the payment came with a guarantee that the country would indeed host the event, with many questioning whether the claim was another in the long line of fibs that are often peddled by the current government.
