All M-Pesa services to be unavailable as Safaricom announces 3-hour maintenance

Safaricom PLC has announced a planned M-Pesa system upgrade affecting M-Pesa and airtime services.

In a notice dated September 19, Safaricom said the system upgrade is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 12:30 am to 3:30 am.

During the three-hour maintenance period, all M-PESA services including money transfers, payments, and airtime purchases will be temporarily unavailable.

“To support this and meet our promise to offer always-on, safe, secure, and worry-free financial products and services, we will be conducting a scheduled system upgrade on Monday, 22nd September 2025, from 0:30 AM to 3:30 AM,” the notice read.

The telco emphasised that the timing of the upgrade has been carefully selected to minimise disruption. Customers are advised to plan their transactions accordingly before the scheduled maintenance window.

“We apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused and thank you for your continued support,” Safaricom stated.

Launched in 2007, M-Pesa has over the years grown to become the widely used money transfer service in Kenya. The platform has driven financial inclusion to 83.7 per cent in 2021 from a low of 26.7 per cent in 2006

The platform currently serves over 32 million customers and generated over Sh139.9 billion in revenue as of 2024.
