Safaricom launches information booklet on its network

In line with its proactive commitment to creating a sustainable and responsible business, Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) has partnered with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the Communications Authority (CA), to launch an information booklet on the safe use of telecommunication equipment.

Speaking during the launch of the booklet titled: ‘The Answer Is In Your Hands,’ Geoffrey Wahungu, Director-General, NEMA said: “This timely publication provides information that will go a long way towards demystifying how mobile phones and telecommunications masts work while addressing any fears on radio waves”.

The latest Communication Authority Statistics indicate that Kenya has more than 38 million active mobile phone users. East Africa is home to a high number of telecommunications masts, with an estimated 6,000 in Kenya alone.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that we conduct our business with an emphasis on being transparent in our operations. This booklet seeks to ensure that our customers – who remain an integral stakeholder in the future of growth – understand the latest information on our expanding network,” said Bob Collymore, CEO, Safaricom.

The majority of scientific opinion, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), finds that there is no clear evidence that mobile phones or base stations present pose any risk to human health.

The booklet is available for free from NEMA and Communications Authority offices as well as Safaricom shops country wide. The online version is available on www.safaricom.co.ke/Emf
