Safaricom to launch targeted post-paid tariffs

Safaricom is set to launch a new post-paid tariff plan that will cost between Sh1,249 and Sh19,999 per month for a pre-set amount of talk time, SMS and data usage.

The operator in an internal memo told its staff last week that the new plan will be made available to pre-paid customers based on their monthly spend or average revenue per user (ARPU).

Customers whose monthly usage is higher than what is prescribed in the new tariff guide will not be allowed to enlist to the new cheaper bands.

“For example, a customer with an average monthly usage of Sh3,000 will not have the Sh1,249, Sh1,499 and Sh1,999 bundles available on his menu,” Safaricom said in a notice sent to its staff on Monday last week.

“This is to mitigate customers downgrading and spending less than they are used to,” added the notice.

Safaricom’s proposed tariff, “Targeted Advanced Plus”, consists of six choices whose monthly cost is Sh1,249, Sh1,499, Sh1,999, Sh3,999, Sh6,999 or Sh19,999.

In exchange, customers will receive between 400 and 18,000 talk time minutes, between 200 and 18,000 SMSs and between 200 megabytes and 20 gigabytes of data.

Customers will also receive between 125 and 2,000 loyalty (Bonga) points on subscription or monthly renewal of their plan.

“The proposed packages will provide some additional flexibility for subscribers to enjoy more value,” said Safaricom corporate director Stephen Chege in a statement.
