We won’t split Safaricom, CA says

Safaricom will not be split into two. This is according to the Communications Authority (CA.

This follows a draft report by Analysys Mason that had proposed that Safaricom be split into different entities because its dominant position in the market was stifling competition.

“I wish to allay fears that the authority is planning to split the business of some market players or take such drastic actions that may destabilise dominant market players,” said CA chairman Mr Ben Gituku.

The report by Anylysys Mason had pitched for implementation of interoperability in the mobile money market by the end of the year, failure to which M-Pesa ought to be cleaved from Safaricom.

Safaricom has already spoken against such a move, which has been interpreted by some analysts as akin to punishing success.

The push to have Safaricom declared dominant and forced to share some of its infrastructure with the smaller players in the telco industry has been mainly spearheaded by rivals Orange and Airtel.
