Sakaja cancels licenses of all night clubs in Nairobi estates

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has banned night clubs from operating in residential estates.

The Governor has also ordered that clubs that operate in residential estates to limit noise and operate within the specified timelines and regulations.

Sakaja ordered that licenses that have already been issued to night clubs be revoked immediately. He claimed that the ban has been necessitated by complaints from residents over noise pollution.

“Those already issued are hereby cancelled, and the establishments may continue operating as bars and restaurants only. Henceforth, nightclub licenses will be issued to premises only within the Central Business District and specified streets in other non-residential areas,” he said.

Sakaja further prohibited playing of loud music by clubs past 10pm.

“Bars and restaurants in residential areas must operate within the specified time and control noise emanating from their premises,” he said.

Recently, popular Citizen Tv presenter Trevor Ombija was caught in the eye of the storm after a club that is associated with him was cited for noise pollution by former model Emma Too.  The club is located in the Kileleshwa area.

In his new ban, Sakaja ordered that all liquor-selling premises in the county should provide sufficient parking for clientele.

Ms. Too had complained that patrons attending Ombija’s club were being drooped off and picked up outside her gate, posing a security threat to her well being.
