Sakaja takes disciplinary action against 2 Nairobi County employees on their first day at work

Nairobi County governor Johnson Sakaja has called for serious disciplinary actions against two Nairobi County employees for disobeying orders during the launch of Nairobi City County El Nino Preparedness Plan 2023 on Monday, 11 September.

During the event hosted at Uhuru Park, Ibrahim Auma, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for  Green Nairobi (Environment), asked all the new recruits to stand up and affirm that they will take responsibility for the cleanliness of Nairobi.

However, the two employees, identified as Ian Maina and Idris Mwilu, disobeyed the order and remained seated, an action that irked the governor.

“On your first day at work, CECM start them on disciplinary. Either that or you do not get your letters. We will not take lack of discipline. So those two CECM, you will tell me the action you have taken.’’

“And if they will not convince you why they didn’t stand up, they better not start the job. We will get a replacement,’’ Sakaja ordered.

Maina and Mwilu were part of 3,500 environmental officers recruited to clean the City as part of the Nairobi County government’s plan to mitigate the negative impacts of the El Nino rains.

The new recruits will be responsible for the cleaning of the city and unclogging drainages to avoid flooding. Sakaja further unveiled measures that the county has put in place to prevent the loss of lives occasioned by the expected heavy downpour.

This includes the mapping of unsafe residential buildings where tenants will be evacuated before the flooding begins.

“We have mapped out the disaster hotspots, and we will publish that for the people of Nairobi to know the areas that need to be avoided,” he said.

The Nairobi county government will also unveil an emergency number for residents to report El Nino emergencies. The county has bought 27 new work trucks, fire trucks, flushing units, ambulances, excavators, and exhausters.

Sakaja urged Nairobians to cooperate in case of emergencies to prevent loss of lives.
