Salary of Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs in Kenya

Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs in Kenya play a significant role in maintaining law and order in their appointed areas.

The officers work in collaboration with village elders to fulfill their duties. Among the qualifications for becoming a chief or assistant chief in Kenya are the following:

  1. Be a Kenyan citizen.
  2. Be at least 35 years old.
  3. Have a minimum of five years of work experience in the Public Service.
  4. Reside in the particular sitting location.
  5. Hold an original Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a mean grade of C.
  6. Possess a certificate in Public Administration/Management, Social Work/Community Development, Teaching, Disaster Management, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized Kenyan institution.
  7. Good communication skills, responsibility, and professional services are considered advantageous.

Unlike in the past, Chiefs and their assistants are now eligible for promotion and salary rise. Initially, Chiefs used to earn Sh15,000 exclusive of house allowances and other benefits.

This was increased to Sh33,000 but reports have it that the increment was not effected. On average, Chiefs in Kenya earn monthly salaries that range from Ksh30,000 to 70,000, depending on the level of experience.

NCBA

Assistant chiefs earn salaries that range from Ks 26,000 to 47,000, excluding allowances. Their jobs are permanent and pensionable.
