Street beggar angers officer who bought him tricycle, stock by returning to begging

Kenyan police officer Sammy Ondimu is upset and frustrated by the behaviour of a former street beggar he once chose to uplift from the streets. He first spotted this man in 2022.

Ondimu shared that he previously admired the street beggar, who sold groundnuts in Nakuru town using only his bare feet and hands.

Ondimu had pure intentions when he decided to enhance the man’s life by providing him with a wheelchair and a tricycle. He reached out to his fellow police officers, including OCS Derrick Nyaga of Central Police Nakuru, to rally further assistance.

“I remember there was a time I was tagged story ya this guy, and I mobilised my colleagues led by OCS @Derrick Nyaga of Central Police Nakuru na tukampelekea Tricycle,” Ondimu wrote.

Ondimu helped the street beggar’s business by giving him extra money. He also asked the county officials for a special selling place for the beggar to sell his groundnuts.

Despite genuinely concerted efforts to help the man, in a twist of events, it seemingly turns out that the street beggar has disregarded Ondimu’s effort to improve his life by leaving his tricycle at home.

This upset the police officer, who questioned whether his efforts to help the man had been in vain. He vented his frustration on Facebook, mentioning that he had seen the man crawling on the streets after leaving work.

“Today I saw him nikitoka job na imeniuma sana kumuona akifanya business yake na kuhatarisha maisha yake…Imebidi nisimamishe gari na nimwambie tu ukweli (kamsomo kidogo) najua angekuwa sawa angetoroka mbio.”

Ondimu further reiterated that the consequences of his actions could spell more doom for the man and the broader community of People Living With Disability.

“Such people wanafanya wale genuine pwds wasipate help yenye wanahitaji.. You help someone na wheelchair, then juu anataka watu wamuonee huruma, anawacha kwa nyumba,” he wrote.

Kenyan netizens flocked to Ondimu’s comment section offering suggestions on how the police officer should deal with the man:

Dan Tosh: Let him alone to continue with his modus operadi as his signature and use the wheelchair for long distant operations please he will thank you later.

Sonny Khalisia: Taking advantage of the situation, not good at all

Derrick Mbugua: They do that to attract sympathy from buyers it’s so unfortunate some take their situation as an investment to do business.

Frieda Kimanga: This is so wrong

Murage James: Kuna angle huelewi, akiwa bila kagari anahurumiwa zaidi mapato inakuwa mob.

Saidi Mulisia Junior: Me since I realised dome pwds own flats nd others are used by tanzanians to collect cash I help selectively.
