Samuel Kimani: Why I quit my nursing job in the US to start restaurant business

For many years, Samuel Kimani, a Kenyan nurse, offered medical assistance to the sick in Kenya before deciding to relocate abroad in search of greener pastures.

While in the US, he continued with his nursing career but it was not long before he made the unexpected move.

With the US being one of the high-paying employers for nurses, Kimani decided to quit the profession to venture into entrepreneurship, a move he says he doesn’t regret.

The businessman started a restaurant business in Alabama where he serves various Kenyan cuisine including ugali, bhajia, and various types of meat including matumbo and goat meat with Nyama Choma being the restaurant’s signature meal.

The restaurant, christened Jambo Grill, also serves Caribbean delicacies, including flavorful oxtail.

He notes that what inspired him to start a restaurant business is the fact that no other restaurant in Alabama served Kenyan cuisine.

According to him, one of the main reasons his restaurant has thrived is its location, next to the market, and a parking lot, which has enabled it to attract a lot of customers.

His employees include nationalities from various countries, including Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, and India. While the business has faced multiple challenges, Kimani says he does not regret quitting his job to launch it.

“Despite the challenges ahead, I decided to open it and it has become a success. I used to work in hospitals but I am also a businessman,” he said.

Among the challenges he encountered was hiring Kenyan workers as the US laws do not allow business establishments to hire workers without proper documentation.

He advised people intending to venture into entrepreneurship to look for a good location, affordable space, good employees, and a unique menu to ensure customers keep coming back.
