How I started Suza Crafts World (SCW)

At first I was not aware it was really a business when I was starting. All I knew was I could make cards. At a certain point, I decided not to be simply making cards for friends free of charge but to at least be earning some money from it. Main influence to my current entrepreneurial career was the previous position I held last year as a Fashion & Lifestyle writer. I felt inadequate at it and confined in a specific work frame until I had to quit. After intense self-evaluation it became clear I wanted to open a craft business. Since then I’ve never looked back.

As an established business, SCW has been in existence since May 2016. In one year, we have released 19 wedding products into the market, numerous greeting & corporate cards and has had the opportunity to facilitate an art space during a leading Kid’s Fun Day. We also shelf our greeting cards at Gifted Hands Store, Kimathi Street. We have a charity enthusiasm spirit and have occasionally plugged into art activities as a way to give back. Currently we are planning one of our own charity craft fair that aims at equipping children in the slum with art skills which they can make a livelihood from.

Method used to market the business

Most effective way of publicizing our business has been via Instagram, because it is image oriented. I’ve acquired new clients from it and been able to inspire other crafters to make profit out of their skill. My business is still growing but so far, the feedback from clients has been great.

The business has also benefited greatly from referrals. This has made me uphold strong client relation because I know they are the best ‘billboards’ to startup companies.

Passion for the business

What I love most about my business is this has been a constant learning journey. A client comes with something I have not done before and I have to take up the challenge and deliver. I had no business background so I’m learning how to manage finances, book keeping, how to deal with tough clients, dealing with service providers who are not diligent etc. All these makes me better each day.

I also love the fact that I get to create something which will be used to fulfill someone else’s need. I appreciate the fact that through my skill, I get to be a solution to someone else’s problem. It is amazing to realize that each time a client collects their cards, especially wedding invites, they will tick off one thing out of their to-do list. And do so with a smile.

How I handle challenges

When hard times come, I remember that this was supposed to be a hobby. This was something that was to give me pleasure when I do. I tend to craft more because it’s therapeutical. I also remind myself “if a diamond does not go through the fire it won’t sparkle”.

Advice for young entrepreneurs

To every entrepreneur reading this, keep going. Specifically to start ups, do not let go. You may have zero clients, no pay, and no returns as you start but if you are consistent believe me your hard work and persistence will pay off. Also, be diligent in your work. Avoid using low quality and cheap material to make your products. Short changing your clients may make you huge profits at the beginning but will throw you off the market. Aim to make the best brand in the business field you are in. Aim to build a legacy.
