Simple tips on how to make up to Sh5,000 daily selling basic consumer goods

The consumer goods retail business is one of the investments Kenyans love socking their money into, especially in areas where apartments are prevalent.

These shops mainly focus on commonly used consumer goods, such as flour, rice, soap, cooking oil, milk, and bread, among others.

While some of these shops have a good customer flow, it’s hard to tell whether some make sustainable profit. This article focuses on some tips for a profitable shop business, as shared by some of the entrepreneurs in this business.

Multiple services

According to John Karimi, who runs a shop in Mtwapa, offering multiple services is key to the success of your business. Take keen note of some services that your customers frequently ask for and provide them.

Karimi, who started with fast-moving items such as flour, milk, and toiletries, says his business peaked well after expanding into cereals, muguka, and mobile money services.

“I make a profit of about Sh600 a day. Consumer items, muguka, and Mpesa cannot sustain a business by themselves, but when combined, the shop can give you good income.” He says.

Karimi adds that when his Muguka customers buy the stimulant, they end up purchasing additional items such as cigarettes, soda, and chewing gum before leaving the shop. In that way, the three lines of business complement each other.

Consistency in business hours

He notes that a lack of consistency in operating hours can drive away customers.  He says when you consistently deliver the same services to your clients every time, they will always expect from you.

In addition, attending to your customers consistently makes it easier for you to track the progress of your business. Karimi opens his shop each day from 6 a.m. to 9.30 p.m., except on Sundays when he opens a bit later after attending early morning mass.

Build a rapport

A rapport helps create a positive emotional connection between you and the customer. When customers feel comfortable and confident in your services, they will definitely return to the shop.

While Karimi is not a regular consumer of muguka, he sits with his muguka customers on a bench outside the shop as they slowly chew the stimulant, sharing stories. This encourages them to return the following day.
