The Southern Bypass has been shut down partially. The shutdown will last for 28 days starting on December 27, 2023.
This has been announced by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA). According to the notice by Kenha the partial closure will end on January 23, 2024.
The closure, said Kenha, will pave way for the construction of a virtual weighbridge on the highway that has become a popular route for trucks heading to and from Mombasa.

The Southern Bypass allows trucks to avoid the Nairobi Central Business District’s heavy traffic by diverting from Kikuyu and connecting to Mombasa Road.
During the construction period, the highway will see each lane on either side of traffic closed at a time.
The Southern Bypass recently hit the headlines after Kenha installed new speed bumps without signage. The bumps were attributed as the cause of multiple accidents, with drivers along the road complaining that they were unnecessary, and poorly installed.
The road was officially launched by the late former President Mwai Kibaki in early 2012. Its construction cost an estimated Sh. 17.1billion. The road is a 28.6 kilometre dual carriageway, and has 12 kilometres of slip roads and 8.5 kilometres of service roads.
