Did you know that there is a day dedicated exclusively to asteroids? Did you know that the Asteroids Day is June 30? Happy Asteroids Day!
This is a global awareness campaign day where people from around the world come together to learn about asteroids. The day is held each year on June 30, which is the anniversary of the largest impact by an asteroid in recent history. This incident is popularly referred to as the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia. This was a large explosion that occurred near the Stony Tunguska River, in Yeniseysk Governorate (now Krasnoyarsk Krai), Russian Empire, on the morning of 30 June 1908.
The explosion over the sparsely populated Eastern Siberian Taiga flattened 2,000 km2 (770 sq mi) of forest (it caused no known casualties among humans).
Different studies have yielded varying estimates of the superbolide’s size, on the order of 60 to 190 metres (200 to 620 feet), depending on whether the body was a comet or a denser asteroid.
It is the largest known impact event on Earth in recorded history. And tonight at 11:10pm on StarTimes, you an catch the Discovery Science Channel and learn more about how magnificent asteroids are and the incredible details around them. Man versus Asteroids will be broadcast tonight on Channel 222 on StarTimes.
