Strange developments in Sankok son’s death by gun shot

Investigations into the death of nominated Member of Parliament David Ole Sankok has produced more questions than answers. Initially, it was said that Sankok son’s death was the result of a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

The boy was suspected to have used his father’s gun to end his life. It was however not clear how he accessed it.

However, it has now emerged that there was more than one gun at the home of Sankok, and it is not very clear which gun the boy had used.

“Experts at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Forensic Lab were last evening still trying to figure out whether a pistol or a shotgun ended Memusi Sankok’s life on Monday,” a report that appeared in the local newspaper, Daily Nation said.

“A post-mortem conducted at Longisa District Hospital on Tuesday has confirmed that the child’s death was caused by a bullet that entered through Sankok son’s chin and exited at the top of his head.”

On Monday when the boy, Narok County Criminal Investigations Offcer (CCIO) Mwenda Ithaiba said that the boy was supposed to be at school. “From the preliminary investigations, we have established that the boy was meant to go back to school last week but he didn’t. He spent the money that was meant for shopping and returned home,” said Ithaiba.

Ithabia said that Sankok and his son had altercation in the morning over the boy’s failure to return to school. Following the altercation, Sankok left for Ewaso Nyiro.

Thereafter, Sankok’s son accessed the gun’s safe and pulled the trigger on himself at his parents’ bedroom.

Reports further say that detectives pursuing the matter did not find any spent cartridge at the scene. This has raised queries on whether the scene had been tampered with.

“Unlike other rifles, a shotgun releases pellets. No bullet or cartridge was found,” said Ithabia.

Reports said that the “boy accessed his mother’s bag and took the keys to his parents’ bedroom about 3pm. He then opened a safe in the bedroom where the MP keeps his firearms.”

“Though none of the family members recalls hearing a shot, a bar operator near the MP’s home told police that he heard a bang from the direction of the home about 3pm,” a report in the Daily Nation said.

“According to preliminary investigations based on recollections by Sankok’s family, the first person to notice that the boy was dead was his younger brother, who notified their elder sister. Ms Rosemary Sankok, 21 then informed their mother.”
