Students whose KCSE results were canceled to sit special exam in July

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has offered a lifeline to students whose KCSE results were canceled over malpractices. According to KNEC, the 840 students will be allowed to sit in the special KCSE examination that is slated to be take place in July 2025.

The lifeline comes as a reversal on the the stringent rule that had been instituted by the late former cabinet secretary for education Professor George Magoha. The Magoha rule declared a ban of two years on any student who was caught cheating in the national examinations.

According to David Njengere, the chief executive officer at KNEC, the stringent Magoha rule has been relaxed to allow more students to re-sit the national examinations in the mid-year special exam as the country inches closer to the last exam in the KCSE era.

“I wish to remind the public that the last KCSE examination will be administered in 2027. Any person wishing to repeat fully or partially should take advantage of the remaining chances to do so,” said Njengere.

He further revealed that KNEC has already completed an audit on the results of some 2,829 candidates that had been withheld over suspicions of engagements in exam irregularities. It was however not immediately clear if all of these students had been cleared or whether the number of canceled results could rise beyond the 840 students.

With the last national KCSE exams about two years away, the ministry of education will be holding a mid-year special exam series starting in July 2025.

This was initially announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba when he released the 2024 KCSE results.

“Starting this year and following extensive stakeholder consultations, I wish to announce that KNEC will introduce a mid-year series of the KCSE examination to be administered in July every year,” he announced.
