Susan Mang’eni: The bold PS with a vision for Kenyan MSMEs

Susan Auma Mang’eni is the Principal Secretary of the State Department of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

Mang’eni was appointed as a PS in the Ministry of Cooperative and MSMES by President William Ruto in November 2022. She was sworn in alongside 50 other PSs on December 1, 2022, at the State House.

Since assuming office, Mang’eni has been instrumental in driving the MSME sector to positive growth, including equipping local entrepreneurs.

She has led several initiatives that support local businesses, youth, and women-led enterprises, including the recently concluded Women’s Economic Forum Kenya 2025.

With MSMEs being the backbone of Kenya’s economy and source of employment, the PS has been keen on ensuring Kenyans tap into innovative enterprises around the key priority value chains, including dairy, leather, edible oil, coffee, and textile, with essential infrastructure.

She is also at the forefront of supporting the ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ initiative, which prioritises local businesses in public procurement and supply chains.

Prior to her appointment to the current role, Mang’eni had held other high-profile positions throughout her career spanning around 15 years.

She has served in both the private and public sectors, in areas of strategic leadership, public policy formulation, analysis and implementation, enterprise development, institution building, oversight, youth and women empowerment.

Among the organizations the bold PS has worked with are the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF), Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), and the Competition Tribunal of Kenya.

She was also a member of the Working group on the Socio-Economic audit of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, under the Office of the Auditor General.

She led the assessment of the impact of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 on governance and public institutions, whose findings were tabled in the National Assembly in 2016 to help shape the government policies and programmes.

Mang’eni holds an MA in Entrepreneurship Development and a BA in Political Science and Public Administration both from the University of Nairobi.

She is also an alumnus of the 2011 International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP), a US State Department Exchange Programme.
