For many journalists, becoming a prime-time news anchor at a top TV station in Kenya is a dream come true.

Anchors of mainstream media rank as among the most followed public figures countrywide due to their influence, which stretches far and wide.

1. Jeff Koinange

Jeff Koinange, currently a highly esteemed news anchor at Citizen TV, is widely regarded as one of the best in his field.

Having worked at international media giants such as CNN, Jeff began studies at the Hospital Hill School from 1972 to 1974. He then proceeded to St Mary’s School for his A Levels, which he completed in 1984.

Apart from practising journalism, Jeff is also an author. In his career, he’s worked as a flight attendant, then practised at K24, KTN, Reuters, NBC News, and ABC News.

2. Ayub Abdikadir

After Bernard Ndong left behind his job at Royal Media Services, Ayub Abdikadir was poached from K24 as his replacement in the role of primetime news anchor at Citizen TV.

Unknown to many, Ayub Abdikadir is a product of the Wajir High School.

3. Trevor Ombija

His path to success wasn’t easy. He went to Anding’o Opanga Secondary School, a small and modest school in the Nyanza region.

Ombija has faced humble beginnings and several challenges along the way to get to where he is today.

4. Swaleh Mdoe

He is considered one of the best Swahili news anchors in Kenya. His educational background also includes Tudor Day School.

5. Lofty Matambo

This veteran Swahili anchorman fell in love with the language way back in high school, through an inspirational teacher who showed him that he had potential.

He attended Lutsangani Secondary School, and it was during this time that he cultivated his interest in Swahili, which later formed the basis for rather a successful journalism career.

6. Larry Madowo

To many Kenyans, he is a role model, deservedly so. His career journey in the Kenyan media industry saw him excel notably after joining NTV.

He later tried his hand at international media with BBC, and now he is at CNN, where he has done well.

Larry Madowo was a student at St. Gabriel’s Seminary, where his educational foundation contributed to his later success in journalism.
