Uchumi shuts down five key branches, sacks 253 employees

Uchumi Supermarkets has closed five of its branches in a moved termed as a cost-cutting measure. The five branches that have been closed are in Eldoret, Nakuru, Kisii, Embu and Taj Mall.

The move to closer these branches follows another move that saw Uchumi Supermarkets close its businesses in both Uganda and Tanzania.

According to Uchumi Supermarkets management, the five closed branches have been incurring losses. Although Uchumi is expected to save Sh. 40 million per month from this move, the closure was the end of the road for some 253 Uchumi employees who were sent home.

Uchumi is expected to pay the sacked staff two months’ salary in lieu of statutory and redundancy notice, 15-day severance pay for each year worked, accrued leave, off-days, overtime, and pension contributions.
