UDA wins MP seat in Uhuru’s Gatundu South

UDA’s Gabriel Kagombe has been named winner in the Gatundu South parliamentary contest.

Gatundu South is the home constituency of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kagombe won with 17,825 votes. He was followed by Kung’u Kibathi who was contesting on an independent ticket.  Kibathi scooped 15,470 votes.

Kagombe will take over from Moses Kuria who has left elective politics after losing in the Kiambu gubernatorial race.

UDA, which is the political party of Deputy President William Ruto, performed unexpectedly well in the area that has been previously by the Kenyatta family.

In the presidential contest in Gatundu South, projections showed that Ruto had received more than half of all votes that were cast at Mutomo in Gatundu South, where President Uhuru cast his votes.

A total of 983 ballots were cast in favour of Ruto while Odinga got 464 votes. The polling station has a total of 2,164 registered voters and only 1,460 turned up to vote.

Three of the votes cast were rejected. Agano presidential candidate Waihiga Mwaure garnered four votes at the polling station and his Roots party counterpart George Wajackoya garnered nine.
