Thousands of students locked out of UoN after fees hiked

UoN First year Fees: Thousands of students are yet to report for their first year at the University of Nairobi. This follows the hiking of fees for students who were set to join for the institution for their first year of learning.

According to a report that appeared in the Daily Nation on Monday, one student was required to pay Sh. 59,000 as tuition fee, Sh. 38, 000 for accommodation and buy a laptop valued at Sh. 40, 000. Previously the annual figure was Sh. 26,500 which was also inclusive of Sh. 16,000 tuition fees.

The daily quoted the University of Nairobi Director of Corporate Affairs, John Orindi, saying that up to 1,971 government-sponsored students were yet to report four weeks since the admissions began.

“The university usually gives new students a reporting window of five weeks. Those who will not have reported by Friday will have to wait until next year,” Orindi said.

He added that out of 10,971 students called for government and privately sponsored programmes, a total of 4, 136 are yet to report. From the 4,564 students who received letters for self-sponsored programmes, some 2,165 have not reported to the university.

“Last month, the University of Nairobi announced that undergraduate annual tuition and administrative fees had been increased from Sh. 26,500 to Sh. 59,000 for first year government-sponsored students.  A student will pay Sh. 54,000 in the second semester,” the daily reported. “Self-sponsored degree programmes, which cost an average of Sh. 300,000, are now more than Sh. 600,000. The fee for self-sponsored students taking medicine was increased from Sh. 445,000 to Sh. 640,000.”

Figures by the daily further report how students pursuing medicine will pay an arm and a leg. Ear, Nose and Throat surgery will pay Sh. 480,000 up from Sh. 324, 000. The fee for master’s courses in art programmes, which used to be Sh. 275,000 has been increased by 147 per cent to Sh. 680,000.
