The University of Nairobi (UoN) is the only Kenyan University that managed in the list of the world’s top 2,000 universities in the latest rankings released by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
The methodology applied in listing the universities was through assessments of the quality of education (25%), alumni employment (25%), quality of faculty (10%), and research performance (40%) without relying on surveys and university data submissions.
According to the list released on Monday, UoN was ranked as the 1,425th top university in the world and the leading higher learning institution in Kenya.

The institution, however, dropped from last year’s 1,404th position, primarily attributed to a decline in the employability of its graduates and its research output, which are some of the key performance indicators.
South Africa was the top African country with the highest number of the World’s best higher learning institutions. The country produced 12 Universities, with the University of Cape Town leading at position 267.
Egypt followed with 20 universities, with Cairo University ranking top at position 520. Uganda’s Makerere University came in at position 950, and Morocco’s Mohammed V University was listed at position 953.
The CWUR president raised concerns over the performance of Kenyan universities, pointing out the need for funding to promote the country’s higher education system.

“It is alarming to see only one Kenyan university in the rankings. Funding to further promote the development and reputation of Kenya’s higher education system is vital if the country is to be more competitive on the global stage,” he said.
The US universities dominated the list with the top 10 institutions in the list based in America and UK. Harvard was ranked the world’s top university, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
The UK’s Cambridge and Oxford (ranked fourth and fifth, respectively) are the only non-US universities in the top ten. The others are Princeton, Chicago, Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Yale.
