UoN Student Deregistration: The University of Nairobi has deregistered 30,000 students. The deregistration is part of a clean up the university is undertaking that has targeted students who are not active at the institution.
The affected students include those who have temporarily withdrawn and deferred studies or are serving suspension. The 30,000 who have been axed constituted a third of the university’s student population.
“We started that exercise mid last year and we took through Senate the names of those who have over-stayed, those who are not active and by the time we were closing the year in December, we had expunged slightly above 30,000. We have to ensure that we have active students. If you have not been active then we remove you from our system so that we focus on those who have registered with us and are spending their time here,” UoN Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama said.
The university Senate had in March 2021 adopted a resolution to terminate the inactive students. UoN Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, in a memo, had said that the Senate had in a meeting held on August 26, 2020 approved Guidelines for Student Progression, 2020.

In these UoN student deregistration guidelines, Section 2.7 provided for termination of students progression and deregistration. He said that, pursuant to Section 2.7.2 of these Guidelines, at least four categories of learners would be deregistered. These included those whose studentship has expired; those whose studentship has been terminated by expulsion or discontinuation, in accordance with the respective rules and regulations; those with unexplained failure to transit to the subsequent level; and those who interrupted their studentship by temporary withdrawal, deferment or suspension.
“Students who need assistance, more information and/or further clarification may contact their respective Deans / Directors; Director Graduate School; or Academic Registrar,” he said.
