Bolt surpasses 500 electric bikes in Kenya, pioneering sustainable urban mobility

Bolt, the leading ride-hailing platform in Kenya, announces that its electric two-wheeler fleet has surpassed 500 vehicles. This milestone, achieved through a strategic partnership with M-KOPA, represents approximately 50% of all-electric vehicles in Kenya, making it Bolt’s largest fully electric fleet.

The partnership, which transitioned from a pilot model to fully scaling up in December 2024, has seen rapid adoption, reinforcing the viability of electric bikes as a sustainable and cost-effective mobility solution in Kenya. By the end of 2025, Bolt aims to expand the fleet to 1,500 vehicles, further improving electric bike availability to meet high demand in the market.

“Our journey toward cost-effective and sustainable mobility in Kenya has taken a significant leap forward with this milestone,” said Dimmy Kanyankole, General Manager, Bolt Kenya and Tanzania. “The growth of our electric bikes fleet is not only sustainable but also offers a cost-effective way that allows drivers to have the ability to own these bikes and earn a living while at it.

The initiative has also tested the resilience of battery swap infrastructure, revealing the need for additional battery capacity and charging stations in Nairobi to meet the demand for electric vehicles in Kenya.

“This is a promising indicator for the future of electric mobility in Kenya and Africa,” added Mr. Kanyankole. “With the right infrastructure and partnerships, we can scale these initiatives further, reducing costs, cutting emissions, and making sustainable transport more accessible across the continent.”

As Bolt continues to expand its electrification efforts, this achievement underscores the potential for similar initiatives across other African markets and beyond, paving the way for an affordable and more sustainable urban mobility landscape.
