Tom is a businessman who left the United States and moved to Kibera to start his business. He met his wife virtually and they eventually got married. However, their marriage was not without its challenges.
During the year 2017, Tom caught sight of his spouse in the company of his cousin, and observed that they were interlocking hands. Intrigued by this, he inquired how she was acquainted with his relative.
She clarified that they had met through a mutual work colleague and had engaged in a conversation that led to further communication. Eventually, they formed an emotional bond and became involved with one another.
When Tom visited Kenya in 2018, he took the lady to meet his parents. However, his parents were skeptical about her appearance, especially her dyed hair.
‘I don’t know what my parents had seen in her and asked me if am sure she was the girl I am about to marry,” Tom said in an interview with local news site, Tuko.co.ke.
Despite their reservations, Tom was determined to settle down with her.
Surprisingly, within a short month, his wife informed him that she had conceived. Tom went back to the United States and returned nine months later to look for a place to stay in Nairobi. He bought a van for himself and a small car for his wife from Japan as a present.
Upon his arrival, Tom was informed by his spouse that her father was planning to retire and sell nine properties for Sh. 40,000 per unit. Recognizing the potential for investment, Tom negotiated with the father-in-law and successfully managed to purchase the houses for Sh. 35,000 each.
However, when Tom went to see the house, it was nowhere to be found and realized that her wife had not bought the house.
To clear the car from the port, Tom pressured her to wife give out the money that was catered for buying a plot.
“She gave me the money and got Sh. 200,000 in return. Initially, I assumed it was the same amount I had given her for purchasing the Kibera houses. However, I later found out that the money was actually borrowed from a chama.” He narrated.
Tom cleared the car and surprised his wife with it. ”Prior to importing the vehicle, she had persistently requested that I give her the logbook, not knowing that she was under pressure from a women’s group chama from which she had borrowed money that he gave me to clear the vehicle from the port of Mombasa.”

Tom’s wife had deceived the group by insinuating that she was importing vehicles from Japan and would rent them out to generate funds to clear her debt. As a result, the group arranged a meeting in Kibera to address the matter, and subsequently coordinated with the police, leading to her arrest.
”When I went to the police, she informed me that she had been detained over a loan of Sh. 200,000, which I later paid to settle the debt.’
Despite this, Tom started a club business for his wife in Kibra, and their sales hit over 2 million each month. However, there were many things going on behind the scenes. Security personnel were buying alcohol from outside and giving it to the waitresses to serve customers and other dirty tricks.
Tom’s wife had male friends who received free alcohol, which was not accounted for. There were also instances where money was collected, but the amounts received were not what they should have been. Tom eventually found out that his wife had borrowed from a lot of people and had not paid them back.
Furthermore, Tom discovered that his wife had cheated on him with several men, which led to the breakdown of their marriage.
“I found out she was cheating for the partial month of December and partly month of January. While at the shop, she was constantly texting. I’d launched up investigations with different people to help me track her down. She’s been spotted with many guys. She denied everything,” he said.
