Violet Ndukwe: Why I stole my employer's Sh. 683,000 ring, sold it at Sh. 4,000

A woman who was working as a house-help in the prestigious Runda Estate shocked the court this week when she admitted that she stole a her employer’s ring that was worth Sh. 683,700 and sold it at Sh. 4,000.

Violet Ndukwe told the court that she sold the ring in Kawangware, oblivious of its true value. However, she told Magistrate Rose Ndombi at Milimani Law Court that the reason why she stole the ring was because she urgently needed money to pay for her father’s treatment.

“I am pleading with the court and my lady employer to have mercy and forgive me. It is true that I took the ring and sold it at Sh. 4,000 shillings because my father needed urgent medical attention,” the 28-year-old told the court.

The court was told that Violet Ndukwe stole the gold ring on August 3, 2024, at Runda Acacia Grove, from her employer Norah Michelle who is a nurse based in Australia. The nurse had hired Ndukwe to take care of her two children while on holiday in Kenya.

“It is true that l stole the ring and sold it at Kawangware. I just wanted my father to get well. I did not know the ring was valuable to my boss Madam Norah, I have three small children who depend on me for upkeep and it is regrettable that I stole the ring. I will do my best to return the money and have her ring back but I really plead that I be forgiven,” Ndukwe told the court.

The Magistrate asked for Ndukwe’s pre-sentence report and remanded her until September 5, 2004. It was however not immediately clear if the ring had been recovered yet or not, and whether the buyer was being sought for handling stolen goods or not.
