This Is What Will Kill DSTV

By Bizna Brand Analyst

DSTV slashed it’s prices a few days ago. Starting November 1, subscribers will pay up to 13% less for the various packages. The most expensive package (Premium) will now cost Sh 8,180 a month down from Sh9,400 reflecting a 13% drop. Compact Plus which has been going for Sh6,400 will now cost Sh5,425.

However, the company behind it, Mutichoice Africa, has some tough times ahead. Why so? I’ll give you a simple but clear explanation.

The main reason why people subscribe to DSTV.

The main reason why people subscribe to DSTV is football. Let’s be honest, no one cares much about the TV shows or movies. Those can easily be accessed elsewhere. After all, DSTV is notorious for repeating movies. Majority of viewers subscribe to DSTV to watch European football.

The problem is that we are now seeing a situation where most of these games are becoming accessible on various other platforms other than DSTV. If you have internet that is above 2MB/s for example, you can be able to stream all football games that are being broadcaster  on planet earth. All for free.

You should note that DSTV doesn’t give you access to every league. it only lets you in on the major leagues that it has obtained rights to. But with 2MB/s internet or more you can watch any game in this world without paying a cent. Plus you get these games from the world’s top sports channels with the most talented and funny commentators .

Fast home internet is becoming easily accessible for less than five thousand shillings a month. Free wifi is also common. If you have internet, what would make you subscribe to DSTV premium for  Sh 8,180 just to watch a limited number of games? Absolutely nothing. You can get all movies and football for nothing.

Actually the emergence of streaming is also beginning to affect sports viewership in the UK too. This season, the two top channels BT Sports and Sky have recorded a drop in viewership because people find it cheaper to stream or just go to stadiums. Sky doesn’t have the rights to Champions league games but it has all rights to the EPL. On the other hand, BT sports doesn’t have the rights to all premier league games but it has the rights to all champions league games. So if a UK viewer wants to watch everything, he has to subscribe to both channels which is expensive. Thus many people are saying, “to hell with it.”

DSTV’s other major problem.

Illegal DSTV connections are so common nowadays yet there has never been a crackdwon. if you go to any estate in Eastlands for example, you will find that one connection has been shared among over 100 neighbors. There are guys who specialize in splitting the cables. The original subscriber might charge the beneficiaries 500 each a month and gets a total of 50K, yet he only pays DSTV 8k. Those are profits on another level.
