The Mazda Demio is a favourite to many ; a super mini loved for its fuel economy, reliability and “cute” looks. On Kenyan roads, we are starting to see the DJ series on our roads. So how different is it from the older Demio, the DE series?
The most notable difference is the looks. The newer DJ series that has been in production from 2014 looks more refined yet aggressive, and has a face that resembles its big sister the CX-5 ( It looks like a small CX-5) thanks to Mazda’s Kodo design language that is inspired by flow. ( It is the reason why most Mazda models have a striking resemblance as from Year of Manufacture 2014).

There is also a major upgrade to the engine and transmission. Unlike the DE series that came with a 1300cc ZJ-VE engine ( 1500cc options were available but rare on the Kenyan market) the newer Demio DJ comes with a 1300cc P3-VPS Skyactiv engine. Unlike the older Demio where a Skyactiv package was optional, the new Demio DJ comes with the Skyactiv package as standard. It has proved to offer better fuel economy as opposed to the older DE Demio.
A 1500cc Hybrid option is also available.
The most exciting upgrade on the Demio is on the transmission (Gearbox). Unlike the older demio that came with a CVT (Most common) ( A 4 speed auto and a 5 speed manual were available but rare), the newer DJ Demio transfers power to the front wheels via a 6 SPEED Skyactiv drive AUTOMATIC transmission. Mazda has ditched the CVT on this one and it is a pretty good thing. Mazda has always felt the need to offer a thrilling driving experience even for economy cars. A 6 Speed manual is also available but rare.
Well, there has not been much improvement when it comes to suspension, we still have the rear solid axle so the breaking axle problem that is persistent in the demio might persist.
At the moment, prices of the 2014 Mazda Demio are a bit high but are likely to go lower as from this year.
