Wokabi: Is the 2014 Toyota Probox worth buying?

2014 Toyota Probox: The Toyota Probox has been in production since the year 2002. It started sipping into the Kenyan market around 2010 and has since then served diligently. It has withstood a lot of abuse and has proven to be one of the most reliable cars in the Kenyan auto market today.

Over the years there has been little or no updates on the Probox until the 2014 Toyota Probox appeared on Kenyan roads looking better. This update is the subject of this article.

Well, apart from the looks, what other updates are there on the 2014 Probox? Lets compare and contrast these to

The 2014 Probox model code is NSP-160v

The 2012 Probox model code is NCP-50 v

Wokabi: Why you should buy Honda Fit instead of Vitz, Demio, Note

What has remained the same?

– Both still come in two petrol engine options, 1300cc and 1500cc (However there is a difference with the 2014 which I will explain later in the article)

– Both have retained the boxy body look to suit carriage of bulky goods.

– Both still come in 2WD and 4WD drive trains.

What has changed?

Transmission:

The biggest change comes on the transmission. The 2014 Probox comes with a CVT Transmission and has replaced the automatic.

Engine options:

The 1NZ-FE 1500cc option has received some slight updates to achieve better fuel consumption.

However for the 1300cc option, the Probox has lost the 2NZ-FE and has taken up the 1NR-FE

Suspension:

The 2014 Probox has received a revamped suspension upgrade, the 2014 ride is more refined with a softer suspension.

Safety:

The 2014 Probox has a new emergency brake safety feature that is standard in all variants. If you brake hard, the hazard lights go on to alert the motorist behind that the vehicle has come to a sudden deceleration, Clever right?

Steering:

The 2014 probox comes with an electric power steering.

My verdict:

The 2014 Probox is faster, more efficient, more economical on fuel and more comfortable compared the the 2012 one, however i am not sure if the CVT is going to withstand the abuse that the Probox gets on Kenyan roads…Time will tell, it could prove us wrong.
