Telkom to give Safaricom a run for money with East Africa’s fastest internet

36TB Internet: Kenyans may soon start to enjoy faster and more affordable internet. This follows the landing of the East Africa’s largest submarine cable, Djibouti Africa Regional Express dubbed as DARE 1.

The landing of the cable is set to increase competition for internet connectivity between Safaricom and the government backed Telkom.

Djibouti Telcom, the leading telecommunications company in Somalia, Somtel and the government of Kenya through Telkom Kenya witnessed the landing of “DARE 1” (Djibouti African Regional Express) at Nyali Beach Hotel.

However, Dare 1 becomes the fifth undersea cable broadband infrastructure to link Kenya with the rest of the world after landing of SEACOM, Easts African Marine Cable System, Eastern African Submarine Cable System (EASsy) and Madagascar linked, Lion2.

The DARE 1 sub-sea cable is a 3-fiber pair, with a capacity of 36TB each with a lifespan of 20 years. Kenya has access to both, one an express route from Djibouti to Mombasa and the second one terminating into Somalia and then Kenya.

36TB Internet

The 36TB Internet capacity is five times faster than the current 5TB in the country, thus creating an opportunity for automation of services at faster speeds with reliable internet.

The data cable is also expected to cut latency for firms and customers relying on cloud-based solutions.

The cable is built with the 100 Gbps wavelength technology which is adaptable to future technology.

DARE 1 will provide affordable and abundant internet bandwidth to Kenya and the Great Lake countries from June 2020.
