How educated is Fred Matiang’i? Dr. Matiang’i was born in Borabu in Nyamira district. In his early years, Matiang’i worked as a Primary School Teacher in Kisii.
He however gained popularity when he joined the government of former president Uhuru Kenyatta as a cabinet secretary. Matiang’i started off as the Cabinet Secretary for Information Communication and Technology. His last post was as the Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security and Coordination of National Government in the Office of the President. He had assumed this position in January 2018.
On 24 November 2015, former President Kenyatta, in a cabinet reshuffle, had appointed him as the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Science and Technology. Following the the death of Joseph Ole Nkaissery on 8 July 2017, Dr. Matiang’i was appointed in acting capacity as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government.
Dr. Matiang’i has a Bachelors in Education from Kenyatta University. He also has a PhD in Communication and Comparative literature from the University of Nairobi. He also holds a Masters in English from the University of Nairobi. Dr. Fred Matiangi formerly taught at Egerton University and the University of Nairobi.
He has held various research and Programme implementation positions with various local and international organizations. He consulted previously for among others the World Bank, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations Development Programme.

He is a governance and programme implementation expert and the immediate former Country Director of the Kenya Parliamentary Support Programme.
Prior to joining government, he was the Eastern Africa regional Representative for the Centre for International Development, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, the State University of New York. Dr. Fred Matiang’i is married and has two children.
Dr. Matiang’i, who had moved to the United States following a run in with President Ruto’s government, returned to Kenya in April 2025, amidst speculation that he was planning to launch a presidential bid during the 2027 General Elections.
