What you will need to register for SHIF

NHIF Supa Cover Scheme

The Ministry of Health will phase out the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) beginning July 1 and transition into the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

SHIF aims to provide holistic healthcare for all Kenyans by expanding coverage and reducing costs.

Its rollout will see Kenyans remit 2.75 percent of their monthly salaries to the scheme, with the minimum capped at Ksh.300.

This is unlike under NHIF, where employed Kenyans pay between Ksh.150 and Ksh.1,700, while self-employed individuals pay Sh500.

Under the new scheme, all Kenyans currently registered as NHIF members shall be required to register afresh as a SHIF member.

“Kenyans can register on the phone, at public hospitals and also by the 100,000 Community Health Promoters across the country,” Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha stated.

To register, Kenyans will be required to submit some information, including personal details, Address and Contact Details, and information about dependents.

According to the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023, personal details required for the registration exercise include name, employment type, ID number, civil status, date of birth, and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) pin.

In addition, the registrant’s physical address, personal and business contacts, county of residence and postal address will also be required. Those residing abroad are required to reveal their state of residence and ZIP code.

Other requirements include details of dependents, as stated in their ID cards, such as name and date of birth, as well as the relationship the registrant shares with the dependent and preferred Primary Care Networks (PCNs).

Finally, you are required to sign the document to confirm that all the details provided are accurate. If you are unable to write, you can also provide your right thumbmark as a fingerprint.

If a user wants to update information such as marital status, change of name, change of dependents, etc., in the future, they will be able to do so under the Updating/Amendment section.
