How mjengo woman has turned her craft into money-minting business

In the list of bold women who have stepped into fields that are overwhelmingly occupied by men, Hellen Njambi stands tall as a professional painter.

The founder of Helena’s Paint Décor says she diverted into the construction industry after quitting her Tourism and Sales careers, inspired by a former client who was raking a fortune from the paint business.

”I was inspired by a client who was supplying paints from Turkey. She invited me to her shop for training on how to apply the paints and was captivated by the Decorative paints,’’ she told Bizna.

Today, the business that started off as a hobby has blossomed, offering various services, including site visits for quotation, skimming, waterproofing, and renovations.

Njambi also offers assistance with paint selection, wall master application, and decorative paint application.

”I offer clean, neat painting Services and any other home restoration services. I keep the word as per our agreement. And in case of any issues, I communicate,’’ she says.

Being in an industry that has traditionally been dominated by men, Njambi admits that her job has not been a bed of roses. She notes that the main challenge she faces is being despised by foremen.

”Being a male-dominated field, it was very heartbreaking as you would go to a site to ask for work, and the Foreman or Supervisor would look down at you or take you on a wild goose chase. Then you give up. Fundis can let you down especially when they know you’re still new in the field,’’ she explains.

”Another thing is under quoting it really hurts your morale when you have little or nothing left after the work is done,’’ adds Njambi.

For women wanting to venture into the construction industry, Njambi advises: ”For the first year, do not look at what you’re earning. Keep learning, and follow your heart and aspirations. When discouraged, rise, learn, and keep moving.’’

Her 5-year dream is to see her business in the top five women-owned construction firms in Kenya.
