KRA to start tracking how motorists buy and use fuel with eTIMS receipts

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is set to start tracking when motorists buy fuel and how they use it using eTIMS receipts and eTIMS invoices.

According to a report that was published by the Business Daily newspaper, motorists will get an eTIMS receipt or an electronic invoice whenever they purchase fuel. Motorists will be expected to key in their KRA PIN number when buying fuel in order to activate and acquire the eTIMS receipt.

“To streamline VAT on petroleum products, KRA is in the preliminary phase of implementing electronic tax invoicing at fuel stations through eTIMS fuel stations system integration. This will allow the ability to validate invoices or receipts in real time to facilitate tax refunds,” KRA was quoted by the newspaper as stating.

According to KRA’s chief manager in charge of eTIMS Hakamba Wangwe, this new system could be launched countrywide by June 2025. Wangwe stated that the taxman already has three software providers who are offering the solution.

“There is a fuel forecourt solution that we are already piloting among fuel stations. Basically, this solution provides for a situation where eTIMS is integrated at the pump linking the fuel dispenser with the point of sale,” Wangwe was quoted.

This comes hot on the heels of reports that from January 1, 2025, KRA will start to track all imported and locally assembled mobile phones in a bid to monitor tax compliance by manufacturers and distributors.

Apparently, all local mobile phone assemblers will be required to upload the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) Number of each device to a portal that shall be operated by the KRA.

On the other hand, all mobile phone importers shall be required to disclose the IMEI Numbers in their respective import documents that shall then be submitted to the KRA.
