CA revokes licenses of 26 TV, radio stations; see list

The Communication Authority of Kenya has revoked the licenses of 426 service providers in the Kenyan media and telecommunications industry including 26 TV and radio stations.

In a gazette notice dated October 11, Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) Director General and Chief Executive Officer David Mugonyi  said once revoked, the companies will cease to hold any rights to engage in any business.

“Notice is given pursuant to the provisions of the Kenya Information and Communications Act that the Communications Authority of Kenya shall revoke the licenses of the following service providers/operators within seven (7) days from the date of this Gazette Notice. The list of the Service Providers/operators is as shown,” read the Gazette notice in part.

“The revocation will take effect seven (7) days from the date of this Gazette Notice. Any resources held under any of these licenses shall revert to the Authority upon revocation.”

Among the stations whose licenses were revoked are KISS TV, Kwese TV Sky 106.1 FM, Njata FM, Njata TV, Athiani FM, Kihooto FM, Dala FM, and Mwendani FM.

Others are Mwendami TV, Somal FM, Voice Broadcasting Network FM, Nacex FM, Kulmiye FM, Radio Luhya FM, TV Cosmopolitan and Kyeni TV.

CA also revoked licenses of 18 network facility providers (NFP), 113 application service providers (ASP), and 269 content service providers (CSP).

The 269 Content Service Providers (companies) include Ace Inc Solutions Limited, Acted Engineering Limited, Acumen Communications Limited, B Climax Africa Limited, Ber Lula Limited, Bonke Communications Limited, Connect Media Interactive Company Limited, and the Consumer Federation of Kenya among others.

Meanwhile, the 113 affected ASPs are Abishai Telecom Limited, Alliance West Technologies Limited, Alphabest Computers & ICT Solutions, Back Track Technologies, Bandwidth Providers East Africa Limited, Batton Contractors Limited, Cable Car Corporation (Kenya) Limited, Central Vehicle Services Limited, and Chear (K) Limited.
