The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has explained why it is yet to open its portal for university course applications.
Speaking on Friday, February 21, KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome said the delay aims to prevent a financial crisis following the move back to the old funding model.
This is after a High Court ruling on December 20th, which declared the new university funding model illegal and unconstitutional.
According to Wahome, the judgment delivered on December 20 by Justice Chacha Mwita lacked clarity on how to handle students, including those already pursuing various courses.
“The judgment that was delivered by Honorable Justice Chacha Mwita did not give a direction on how to treat even the students that we had placed in the two years and direction moving forward when he said it was unconstitutional,” she stated.

“Looking at where we have come from, we were trying to avert the funding crisis in the Higher education institutions,” she added.
The CEO further revealed that KUCCPS filed an application challenging the ruling and is awaiting the court to give the way forward next week.
“With that lack of clarity, we felt that we also go to court, and that’s why we filed and requested that the court grant stay the execution of the judgment that was given,” Wahome stated.
“We are happy it was taken as an urgent matter, and we are awaiting a ruling next week. That will be able to give us a direction even as we open the portal,” she added.
The higher institutions placement body opened its portal for placement to Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges on January 24, an exercise that concluded on 14th February.
