SS Mehta & Sons invests 450 Million in Expansion

SS Mehta & Sons Ltd, a leading local construction and civil engineering company, is expanding its operations in Kenya as business opportunities increase.

The company has invested Ksh450 million in new equipment to power its existing road projects and in preparation to increase it’s capacity.

Mr Jatinder Mehta, the Managing Director of SS Mehta & Sons Ltd, said the purchase of the brand new equipment is the first phase of the company’s 2016/2017 expansion plan.

“This investment will facilitate the company’s ambitious growth plans to gear up for new projects,” he said when the company took possession of 10 Shacman tippers bought from Avic Shantui Kenya.  “The company always strives to reinvest its profits to modernise and expand its portfolio to effectively and efficiently deliver our product.”

The brand new equipment bought under this investment include the 10 Shacman Tippers, 8 Sany Vibratory Rollers, 6 Hydromech Graders, 6 FAW Tippers, 3 Shantui Wheel Loaders, 2 Sany Pneumatic rollers, 2 FAW Water Bowsers, 1 XCMG Stabilizer,1 Phoenix Chip Spreader and 10 4WD pick-ups

Mr Mehta said the economy was vibrant with the government investing heavily in infrastructure development while the private sector is also expanding, creating a continuous pipeline of construction work.

With a permanent local workforce of 550 staff in Kenya, SS Mehta has a number of projects nearing completion in Naivasha, Murang’a, Kiambu and Mombasa. A few new projects are in the pipeline, he said.

Some of the projects under various stages of completion include construction of Kangema-Gacharage Road at the cost of Ksh4 billion, upgrading of the 18km Moi North Lake Road Marula-Great Rift Valley Lodge to bitumen standard at Ksh1 billion, construction to bitumen standards of the Ngorongo–Githinguri road and access road to Nazareth hospitals valued at Ksh1.3 billion and the Saba Saba–Malindi – B8 Road.

The company was recently awarded the contract to improve to Bitumen standards the Malindi–Kakoneni–Sala Gate Road at the cost for Ksh4.1 billion. “Equipment has already been mobilized and work has commenced,” said Mr Mehta

SS Mehta & Sons latest investment is a sign of confidence in the Kenyan economy, with both the national and county governments pouring funds in infrastructure development.  These governments have budgets to improve road networks and this investment is benefitting local contractors, workers and the Kenyan economy.

Established in 1959 in Kenya, SS Mehta & Sons Ltd, a member of the Roads and Civil Engineering Contractors Association, is one of the leading local contractors that have held their ground despite the increased presence of international construction companies, mainly from Asian countries such as China.

The company delivers a full scope of civil engineering works, operating as the principal contractor for projects in the private and public sector. Its client base is extensive, ranging from international donor organisations, city councils, local authorities, developers and national and international airports,” said Mr Mehta.

The company has undertaken projects of varying contracts valued at over Ksh10 billion. “The company is fully facilitated to operate several projects simultaneously, even if sites are geographically located far apart from each one another,” he said
