Joan Mukiri: How I made Sh1 million in 2 years with Sh30,000 salary

Joan Mukiri, a Nairobi-based businesswoman, has shared how she made Sh1 million in 2 years after cultivating a strict saving culture.

Mukiri, who runs a furniture business in Kahawa Sukari, revealed she made her first million in 2024 after two years of consistent saving.

She explained that the journey began in March 2022, while working at a furniture store in Lavington, earning a net salary of Sh30,000.

Every morning as she got out of her house to work, she had only one dream-to start her own business. As such, she developed a strict saving culture, dedicating 20 percent of her earnings to saving.

“I was following the 50:30:20 budgeting rule without failing. So every month I was saving Sh6,000 on the NCBA Goal Savings Account, which also helped me earn interest on my savings,” she explained.

As businesses continued to recover from the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic, Mukiri started earning commissions, which would sometimes go to upwards of Sh50,000.

She revealed that she never spent any cent from her commission but saved all plus the Sh6,000 from her salary. She kept on increasing her savings amount as the commission continued to grow.

“I wanted to quit employment, that’s why I had to make the sacrifices. By the time I was quitting my job, I was saving Sh80,000,” she said.

Mukiri’s dream to start a business eventually became a reality in 2024 when the 28-year-old opened her furniture store in Kahawa Sukari, with the savings, which amounted to Sh1.3 million.

She encouraged other dreamers to make good use of bank accounts, which not only help in saving but also provide access to funding when short of funds.
