Prime suspect behind KNH ward killings arrested

Homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of a patient at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

The suspect, Kennedy Kalombotole, was arrested on Friday, July 18, in connection with the murder of Edward Maingi Ndegwa, a male patient who was found dead in his bed on July 17.

The deceased had been admitted to Ward 7B on July 11, 2025, and was in stable condition before his body was found in a pool of blood.

Initial reports indicate that a nurse checked on the patient on Thursday, July 17, at around 11:30 am and took his blood pressure. At 12:30 pm, a relative visited and found him stable, before leaving the ward at 1:30 pm.

However, at around 2 pm the same day, a hospital cleaner making their rounds in the corridor noticed blood oozing from the patient’s neck.

Sleuths who visited the scene noticed bloody slippers prints from the victim’s bedside to a nearby toilet and eventually to a side room, where the suspect, Kalombotole, was admitted.

The investigators recovered a pair of blue slippers and a blood-stained bedsheet in the room. Detectives also recovered a knife wrapped in gloves on the ground, directly below the window of the deceased’s ward on the 7th floor.

The recovered items were forwarded to the National Forensic Laboratory for detailed forensic analysis to support the case.

Preliminary investigations further revealed that the suspect had been admitted to the facility on December 1, 2024, and is also linked to the murder of another patient, Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, who was killed in Ward 7C during the night of February 6–7, 2025.

“Following the incident, a case file was compiled and submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). However, after reviewing the file, the ODPP directed the Investigating Officer to undertake further inquiries to reinforce the prosecution’s case,” DCI stated.

The suspect is currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment.
