Kenya’s business community is mourning the passing of Frank Ireri, former Group Managing Director of HF Group Kenya (formerly Housing Finance Company of Kenya Ltd.), who died on Sunday, 26th October 2025.
Frank Ireri was one of the country’s most respected banking leaders, known for his transformative leadership, calm authority, and unwavering commitment to excellence. His distinguished career spanned nearly four decades, shaping the direction of Kenya’s financial services sector.
He began his career in 1985 as an Audit Assistant at Deloitte Haskins & Sells (A.F. Ferguson & Co.) before joining Murdoch, McCrae & Smith as a Management Consultant. In 1989, he joined Citibank N.A. Kenya, where he rose to become Country Financial Controller, helping strengthen financial systems and governance.
Between 1999 and 2002, he served as General Manager for Finance & Operations at Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA), driving operational efficiency and fiscal discipline. His career then advanced through Barclays Bank of Kenya and Barclaycard Africa, where he held several senior roles, including Service Delivery Director, Regional Service Delivery Director, and later Head of Operations for Africa. In these positions, he oversaw operations across Kenya, Botswana, Zambia, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Egypt, guiding teams and implementing strategic growth plans.
Housing Finance MD Frank Ireri’s career profile
In July 2006, Frank took the helm of HF Group Kenya as Managing Director — a position he held until December 2018. Under his leadership, HF transitioned from a mortgage lender into a fully-fledged financial services group, diversifying into banking, insurance, and real estate. He worked closely with the Board and executive team to refine the company’s vision, strengthen risk management, and promote a strong culture of governance and innovation.
At the time of his passing, Frank served as a Member of the Board of Directors at Centum Real Estate, contributing to the company’s strategic growth and governance.
Frank held an MBA and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree from the University of Nairobi, and had completed executive leadership programs at Harvard Business School and Strathmore Business School. He was also a member of ICPAK and a Fellow of the Kenya Institute of Bankers.
Colleagues remember him as “a man of quiet strength — visionary, ethical, and deeply human.” He mentored countless young professionals who now lead across Kenya’s financial sector.
Frank was the loving husband of Angie Ireri and devoted father to Lian Waithera and Ella Gathoni. He was the son of the late Dr. Dunstan and Peninah Ireri, and son-in-law of the late William and Mary Kimemia.
Prayers will be held at his home on Tuesday, 28th October and Wednesday, 29th October 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at Karura Community Chapel on Friday, 31st October 2025, followed by cremation.
