Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is a familiar name in Kenya’s political landscape, having held senior public offices and built a prominent career in government.
However, less is publicly known about his wife, Gladys Wanjiru, who has largely maintained a low profile despite her husband’s visibility in the political arena.
Who is Gladys Wanjiru?
Born on August 16, 1981, Wanjiru is a trained lawyer who has kept much of her personal and professional life away from public attention
Her relationship with Murkomen began in 2000 when the two met while studying law at the University of Nairobi. Murkomen has previously recalled being attracted to Wanjiru when they first met and making several attempts to approach her.
Their friendship eventually developed into a romantic relationship during their second year at university. The couple dated for about six years before formalising their union in December 2009.
While Murkomen gradually became a prominent figure in Kenya’s political circles, Wanjiru largely remained outside the public spotlight, concentrating on her professional and family responsibilities.

Education and Career
Wanjiru and Murkomen share a background in legal education, having studied at the University of Nairobi, where both earned law degrees.
After completing her studies, Wanjiru pursued a career in law and secured employment before her husband established himself professionally.
Murkomen has publicly acknowledged the support she offered during the early years of their relationship, including helping him meet financial needs as he worked towards building his career.
In recounting those years, Murkomen said Wanjiru would send him money for transport and helped him acquire the first vehicle they used before he ventured into politics.
Her contribution, as described by Murkomen, formed part of the couple’s early journey before he attained national prominence.
Wanjiru later made a significant shift in her professional life. In December 2025, Murkomen disclosed that his wife had stepped away from her corporate career to focus on raising their children and managing family responsibilities.
On her part, Wanjiru spoke positively about the decision, saying she wanted to give their children the attention and care they needed as Murkomen continued with the demands of public service.

Marriage and Family Life
Murkomen and Wanjiru married in December 2009 and have four children together. Their marriage has largely remained a private affair, although the Cabinet Secretary occasionally shares tributes to his wife during significant family occasions.
In December 2025, Murkomen marked their 16th wedding anniversary with a public message celebrating their years together.
He has also used birthdays and other family milestones to acknowledge Wanjiru’s place in his life. In August 2026, he shared another birthday tribute, recognising her importance to him and their family.
