How to Book SGR Tickets Using SMS or M-Pesa

This article is a guide on how to book SGR tickets via M-Pesa and SMS. The mode of transport in Kenya has significantly improved with the transition from the regular railway transport to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train passengers will now book SGR tickets via SMS. They will also be able to cancel and pay for their train tickets via the same service.

How to Book SGR Tickets

This follows the introduction of an SMS-based payment platform.

Booking SGR Tickets Procedure

Dial the code *639# and follow a series of prompts to buy tickets to the Mombasa, Nairobi, Voi, and Mtito Andei passenger destinations.

An economy class ticket on the SGR train costs Sh. 700 while a first-class ticket goes for Sh. 3,000.

“We are seeking to leverage the technology offered by the new platform to counter the secondary market of tickets by middlemen who have taken advantage of the use of the stations as the main source of tickets,” said Kenya Railways (KR) Managing Director Atanas Maina.

The SMS-based USSD code will also enable passengers to make payments via MPESA to secure their tickets immediately.

How Many Times Can You Book SGR Tickets

The new platform will allow passengers to make up to five bookings at a go and secure tickets up to seven days in advance.

Once the booking is made, they will receive a confirmation SMS with a unique reference number indicating their destination, time, and date of travel, as well as the number of passengers reflected on the booking.

Commuters will then be required to print their tickets from the service booths at the station upon arrival and produce their National ID cards while checking in to verify their identity.

The services not only allow passengers to book SGR tickets but also cancel the tickets.

SGR Terminuses

There are two SGR terminuses in Kenya:

  • Syokimau, Nairobi
  • Miritini, Mombasa

SGR has eased the commute process from Nairobi-Mombasa and vis versa. With comfort and pocket-friendly fees in place, Kenyans are favoring SGR to other modes of transport. Follow Bizna Kenya to know more about SGR ad general Kenyan News.
