Form One Selection Formula: 2020 KCPE candidates will be subjected to a new Form One selection formula. This is after Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha made changes to the rules that govern the selection of Form One students across the country.
“We want a system that will pick the best brains from Kiandutu slums in Thika and take them to Alliance Girls High school,” Magoha said.

Currently, the Form One selection process is usually influenced by merit, the candidates’ preferred choices, regional balance, and affirmative action. In the case of regional balance, students who topped in their counties or sub-counties are given a chance to join national schools.
Whereas the ministry has previously been conducting multiple selection and placement exercises, in the upcoming selection for the 2020 KCPE candidates, the ministry will only conduct one selection and placement exercise.
This new formula will largely affect students who scored below 350 marks, who usually land their preferred schools during the second selection period.
All the students who sat for the KCPE in March are expected to be placed in secondary schools from late May this year. According to Magoha, Form One selection is slated to start from May 28. “All the 1,187,517 candidates who sat the 2020 exams will transition to secondary schools, placement will be done based on merit,” CS Magoha said.

“I wish to assure the country that the Ministry has already conducted an audit of all new and existing vacancies in all our private and public schools to enable us to admit all learners under the Free Day Secondary Education programme. We are determined to work with the relevant agencies to ensure that no candidate misses a place in secondary school,” he added.
