Baby Caleb Odanga who fell from merry-go-round dies after three weeks in coma

It was a sad Friday, September 1st for the family of Baby Caleb Odanga whose heart stopped beating after staying on a hospital life support machine for 3 weeks.

The 7-year-old Grade One pupil at Greens Angels Academy fought for his life at the ICU in Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital.

The young boy fell from a merry-go-round swing while on a school trip at Destiny Gardens in Ruiru, instantly suffering a traumatic brain injury.

Doctors at the hospital ruled out any possibility of survival for the boy weeks ago as no medical procedure could reverse the damage.

They advised the family to pull the plug on the tubes and machines keeping his brain alive.

However, the family clung to hope, that their only child would recover from the harrowing ordeal. They sought several opinions from other neurosurgeons who gave similar responses.

The family had also considered flying Caleb Odanga to India for treatment until their hopes were shattered when the young one breathed his last.

“A golden heart stopped beating and Baby Caleb went to be with the Lord. It is such an immense grief for the family and we do not know how we shall cope from here,” said his father, Mwangi Odanga.

The family has accused the school administration of neglecting them after the accident. They have a hospital bill in excess of Sh. 1.5 million as they embark on burial preparations.

Green Angels Academy director dismissed the claims, assuring that the school would chip in, by all means, to assist the family grieving and lay their son to rest.

Earlier on, teachers responsible for the students during the school trip were summoned to record their statements. Police stated that they would investigate a case of negligence by the parties involved.

DCI officers have been involved, having visited the scene and talked to the park’s management regarding the safety of their equipment.

Ruiru Sub-county commander Alex Shikondi assured the public that they would leave no stone unturned in the wake of Baby Odanga’s death.
