The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati has addressed the drama that rocked the release of the presidential contest at the Bomas of Kenya.
According to Chebukati, the four commissioners who walked out were attempting to have Chebukati moderate the presidential results in order to force a run-off.
“Commissioners Cherera, Wanderi, Nyang’aya and Masit wanted presidential race results to be moderated to facilitate a run-off,” said Chebukati.
Did State sponsor Bomas chaos to push for run off?
Earlier on Wednesday, the Star newspaper reported that there were attempts at Bomas that were made by a State agency to have a run-off triggered.
“The four Commissioners demanded that the Chairperson moderates the results for purpose of forcing an election Re-run contrary to their oath of office. This is tantamount to subverting the Constitution and the sovereign will of the People of Kenya,” said Cherera.
“The Chairperson refused to yield to this unconstitutional and unlawful demand and proceeded to declare the results of the Presidential Election as received from the polling stations.
Chebukati also dismissed Cherera’s claim that the margin of 0.01 per cent amounted to some 142,000 votes.
“The alleged 0.01 per cent increase in the Presidential Election results raised by the four Commissioners namely Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyang’aya and Irene Masit, is false and misleading,” Chebukati said.
“This is the most transparent election that the Commission has ever held. All results, Form 34As, were uploaded in real-time and are available in the public portal.”
